Drink Recipe:: The Manhattan

by Negronis Greg

Ah, the Manhattan. It's a classic cocktail that's been around since the late 1800s. If you're a fan of whiskey, vermouth, and bitters, then this drink is for you. In this article, I'll be going over the origin story, ingredients, recipe, and who's making the best Manhattan today.

Origin Story:

The Manhattan cocktail's origin story is a bit fuzzy. Some people believe it was created in the 1860s by a bartender named Black at a bar on Broadway in New York City. Others believe it was created at a bar called the Manhattan Club in the 1870s. Regardless of its origin, the drink has become a staple in the cocktail world.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz rye whiskey (you can also use bourbon if you prefer)
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish
  • Orange peel for garnish

Recipe:

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Add rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters.
  3. Stir for about 30 seconds to chill the mixture.
  4. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  5. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a twist of orange peel.

Who's making the best Manhattan today:

It's hard to say who's making the best Manhattan today, as there are so many great bartenders out there who are making amazing cocktails. However, I've heard great things about the Manhattan made by Julie Reiner at Clover Club in Brooklyn, NY. She's known for her classic cocktails and attention to detail, so I'm sure her Manhattan is top-notch.

If you're not in Brooklyn and can't make it to Clover Club, don't worry. You can make a delicious Manhattan at home with the recipe I provided above.

Personal opinion:

I love a good Manhattan. The combination of rye whiskey and sweet vermouth is just perfect, and the bitters add a nice touch of complexity to the drink. I like to pair my Manhattan with some salty snacks, like a plate of cheese and crackers or some cured meats. The saltiness really brings out the flavors in the drink.

So there you have it, folks. The Manhattan cocktail. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Cheers!
