Drink Recipe:: Moscow Mule
Today, we're going to talk about one of my personal favorites, the Moscow Mule.
The Moscow Mule is a refreshing, vodka-based cocktail that's perfect for sipping on a warm summer evening. It's made with a few simple ingredients but packs a punch with its bold flavor profile.
Origin Story: The Moscow Mule was first concocted in 1941 by John G. Martin, a spirits distributor, and Jack Morgan, the owner of the Cock 'n' Bull restaurant in Los Angeles. They wanted to find a way to sell more vodka, which was not as popular in the US at the time as it was in Russia. They came up with the idea of mixing vodka with ginger beer and lime juice, served in a copper mug. The drink was an instant hit and became a staple in bars across the US.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz vodka
- 1/2 oz lime juice
- 4 oz ginger beer
- Lime wedge, for garnish
- Ice
Recipe:
- Fill a copper mug or highball glass with ice.
- Add the vodka and lime juice and stir to combine.
- Pour in the ginger beer and stir gently.
- Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy!
Who's making them the best today: The Moscow Mule has become a popular drink, and you can find it on the menu at most bars and restaurants. However, some places are known for making exceptional Moscow Mules. One such place is "The Varnish" in Los Angeles, where bartender Eric Alperin crafts a mean Moscow Mule. Another is "The Dead Rabbit" in New York, where they make their ginger beer in-house, giving their Moscow Mules a unique flavor. You can follow them on Instagram @thevarnish and @deadrabbitnyc to keep up with their latest creations.
Personal opinion: As someone who loves ginger, the Moscow Mule is one of my favorite cocktails. I love how the tangy lime juice balances the spiciness of the ginger beer, and the copper mug adds a touch of class to the drink. I think the Moscow Mule pairs well with spicy foods like curry or Mexican cuisine, as well as grilled meats and vegetables.
So next time you're in the mood for a refreshing cocktail, give the Moscow Mule a try. It's a classic for a reason!
