Drink Recipe:: Moscow Mule

by Negronis Greg

Today I'll be talking about one of my all-time favorite cocktails - the Moscow Mule. This refreshing drink is perfect for a hot summer day or a cozy winter night by the fire. Let's dive into its origin story, ingredients, recipe, and who makes it the best today.

Origin Story:

The Moscow Mule was first created in the 1940s when John G. Martin, a spirits distributor, and Jack Morgan, owner of the Cock 'n' Bull pub in Los Angeles, were struggling to sell their products. They combined their efforts and created a cocktail that used Martin's Smirnoff vodka and Morgan's ginger beer, served in a copper mug. The drink was a hit and quickly gained popularity across the United States.

Ingredients:

The Moscow Mule is a simple cocktail that requires only a few ingredients: vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. The traditional garnish is a slice of lime and a sprig of mint.

Recipe:

Here's a simple recipe for a Moscow Mule:

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 4-6 oz ginger beer
  • 1/2 oz lime juice
  • Lime wedge and mint sprig, for garnish
  1. Fill a copper mug (or highball glass) with ice.
  2. Add vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice to the mug and stir.
  3. Garnish with a lime wedge and mint sprig.

Who Makes it Best:

There are many bars and restaurants that serve great Moscow Mules, but one of the most famous places to enjoy this drink is the Moscow Copper Co. in Arizona. The company makes and sells authentic copper mugs, which are a key part of the Moscow Mule experience. They also offer recipes and tips on their website for making the perfect Moscow Mule.

Personal Opinion:

The Moscow Mule is a classic cocktail that I love to sip on when I'm in the mood for something refreshing and not too sweet. I think the combination of spicy ginger beer and tart lime juice perfectly complement the smoothness of vodka. And of course, drinking out of a copper mug just makes the whole experience feel special. I think the Moscow Mule pairs well with light snacks like chips and salsa, or even a charcuterie board.

Overall, the Moscow Mule is a timeless cocktail that has stood the test of time. With its simple recipe and refreshing taste, it's no wonder that it's still popular over 70 years after its creation. So next time you're looking for a classic cocktail to enjoy, give the Moscow Mule a try. Cheers!
